The wet sand crunched beneath my feet as I walked towards the water. His hand was in mine, holding on like he’d never let me go, but he wasn’t moving forwards like I was.
“I’ve got to stay here,” he apologized.
“I know,” I responded softly.
Slowly, my hand slipped out of his, and I was alone again. My feet moved under their own power and I kept walking farther and farther away from him until finally, I was in the water and nothing else mattered.
